The Dawn Chorus / The Retrospective Soundtrack Players - Blogging all over the World

My name is Kyle. I am a happily failing indie/punk/folk/country/rock musician from Hampshire, UK. I have been singing and songwriting in The Dawn Chorus since 2005, and The Retrospective Soundtrack Players since 2010. I love these two bands like my brother/wife rolled into one. This blog details the shows I have played with both bands, in chronological order.

XIV - The Star, Guildford - 19th April 2006

The Star, Guildford
Wednesday 19th April

Tamerlane
The Dawn Chorus
Whitewash

Driving to guildford, listened to a bit of rilo kiley on the way, 2nd album is definitely too sugary, taking suicide turns on roundabouts, trying to find the place amongst ridiculous one-way systems, get clewee the druglord to show us the way, get some food, do a little soundcheck, watch some of the arsenal game, watch whitewash, not bad for youngsters but not great, catch up with goater and captain black, lovely boys will have to do it again soon, limber up, play the set, michael first, felt a bit weird, played most songs too fast, rally wasnt great fun to play, very bright lights on stage, couldnt see my chord playing hand or hear my guitar very well so there's my excuse, had a little drink, watched tamerlane, rocking as ever, arsenal won, there was a squirrel on the pitch, something fun for the end of the 10 o'clock news, very tired and emotional, guildford laid to waste, well 10 people from guildford including the other bands anyway, home to bed, nice sleep. cheers to tweeks for constant dedication, number one fan status confirmed.

XIII - Portsmouth Edge of the Wedge - 18/04/06

Portsmouth Edge of the Wedge
Tuesday 18th April 2006

Sister Divine
The Dawn Chorus

This little light of mine, i'm gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
Always an interesting night at the Edge. As we get more and more gigs i'm finding less and less time to write these less and less interesting nuggets of blog, but here is a nugget nonetheless. A small shimmering piece of blog, with not much to say. So basically, we thought we were a bit average but i did still enjoy it on the most part, plenty of the Pompey crew made their way down so cheers to Joel, Kurt C, Lolly, Rossco, Radio Mark and all the other lovely people who came along. Simps threw some Bez moves, neil broke a few strings and Michael was confirmed as our 'Teenage Dirtbag'. Thankyou all

XII - Guildhall Tavern, Winchester - 6th April 2006 (Winchester massive battle of the bands)

Thursday 6th April 2006
Winchester Guildhall Tavern

Geko
No Skidoo
Zodiac
The Dawn Chorus

We won! Yay! This was really quite funny, we didn't expect to win at all, Matt even wanted to leave before the announcement. I suppose variety was the name of the game tonight, with girl fronted britpunk (?), Busted meets Green Day pop punk, wailing Led Zep covers and dreary old indie bollocks (that's us). Cheers to the Winchester Massive, we are very much looking forward to coming back for the final in a few weeks, we promise we will look more interested! Oh, if anyone else finds the mirrors in the Guildhall Tavern confusing, please let us know so that i can shout 'TOLD YOU SO!' in neil's face. Cheers
See you soon

XI - Hampshire Rose, Waterlooville, 3rd April 2006

The Hampshire Rose, Waterlooville
3rd April 2006

The Light Shines ???
?????
The Dawn Chorus

Yay we won! This was a nasty battle of the bands thing, and we won with an average of 63%, which as neil rightly pointed out is a 2:1. This was one of those nights when you rush around like mad to get there on time and then sit around for hours and nothing happens. We were meant to play at 8, but nobody had soundchecked a note by then. We ended up playing w/o a soundcheck at about 8.30 and it went pretty well. I thought we played well, but one of the judges disagreed as they only gave us 5 for musical timing. We got 9 for originality from one judge, but only 5 from another. I do love thes battle of the bands things. One of the judges wrote 'Zutons eat your heart out', which is just brilliant. The best thing about the night, and the thing i'm most looking forward to when we play again, was the chilli green olives, 3op a tub! brilliant.
